MESSAGE

“What shall I make?”
I ask myself this while searching through my fridge and pantry before every meal.
Of course, I consider, “What do I want to eat?” but other questions come into play: “What should I eat, and why?”
Then there’s “How can I make it taste better?” and “How can I cook it well?”
Also, the approach changes depending on whether I’m cooking just for myself (like tasting) or preparing to entertain others.
Up to this point, it’s very much the same process I go through when creating something in my studio.
I’ve heard that the space I’ll be showing my work in this time will be an old-fashioned kitchen.
As I write this, the menu hasn’t been decided yet. Well, how shall I proceed…?

PROFILE

Tanaka Masato [Japan]

Born in 1961 in Yokohama, Japan, he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. His artistic practice spans a wide range of fields (including exhibitions, commercial displays, and stage art) without strict distinctions between design and fine art.
He creates kinetic installation art that integrates mechanical elements with the natural rhythms of fluctuation, all expressed through his unique style and technique.
The central theme of his work is to cultivate an artistic atmosphere that evokes relaxation and comfort by awakening the innate, latent curiosity within people.
He continually seeks to expand his versatile practice both within Japan and internationally by proposing original concepts. He describes his work as a “playground of our gaze,” deliberately avoiding stereotypical modes of expression.
